    Twist Of Fate asked:

What characteristics and features do you look at to tell the difference between what breed a cat is and isn’t? And how many breeds of cats are there?

look it up online. there arent many.. like 50 or so. the most common in america, unless you go buy a pure breed, are the short and long hair domestic. and they come in different colors, sizes and shapes. i have a domestic short grey, and a long haired orange tabby.

There are myriads of breeds of cats. Best thing to do it go to the library and get a book that shows pics of them. Or do a Google search. It will greatly surprise you how MANY there are.

i think the vet should be able to tell based on muscle structure, fur type and pattern, bone structure of the body and face. and shape of the eyes and ears…etc there may be other organizations that can tell you what exact breed your cat is and maybe give you some sort of document to state if its a purebred or not.

    • The Revolutionary Says:

Most cats, unless they’re Himilayan, Calico, Siamese or something, are just considered “domestic longhaired” or “domestic shorthaired”, which covers most of your average house cats.

How can you tell what “breed” you are? People and animals come with so many mixtures of genes from the past that you can’t discern what’s what. You may look like your aunt Sue, grandmother, grandfather - whatever. You are just a special human and your cat is a special cat.

when you take your cat to the vet they should be able to tell you. unless you got your cat from a breeder most likely your cat is a domestic short/medium/long haired cat.

here is a website for you to look at:

      Hi,
I wouldn’t worry too much about it if it’s a domestic cat. If it’s a Tiger I don’t think you will have trouble being able to tell!

Look at the cat’s registration papers- it will say what breed it is on there. If it is not registered as a breed then it is just a moggy mix.
