    cat breeds
    poet226 asked:

I’m looking for a cat for an elderly person. She has a toy poodle who weighs about 6 pounds, maybe a little less. The dog is very sweet, and not obnoxious in any way to cats. (I have a cat and the dog just looks at her, comes up, then walks away.) The lady wants a cat who probably isn’t going to get huge as it matures, as she doesn’t want the cat to pummel the dog around.

Can you think of any cat breeds that stay fairly small, and adjust well to an environment with other animals? Also, she’d prefer it to have its hair on the shorter side.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

why does it have to be a specific breed? go to the local shelter and pick up a domestic short hair.

Contact your local humane society for a cat that will fit your needs. A rescued cat will appreciate your loving kindness. You can find a young adult, usually with a history of whether it would be good with dogs!

Go and adopt a DSH (domestic short hair) from the local shelter. You can probably find a small, fully grown adult cat.

animal shelter!!!!! there are so many kitties that need homes and for good reasons.. plus they run test on them to make sure they would be compatible with dogs plus they come with shots and spayed and neutered plus if you get a grown one you can tell what size they will be

animal shelters have tons of great cats that need homes, i would stick with a domestic short-haired they typically don’t shed as much.

Don’t try to hard, I mean you probably won’t find an exact breed. Just go to a shelter and ask around if they can predict how the cat will grow. I have four cats, two of which stopped growing after like six months. Its guess work basically unless you are ready to spend some cash.

the Abyssian is a smallish cat related to the siamese and somali cats. very friendly, some are vocal, but with proper training and socialization, should make a great pet. Also consider a shelter cat. they’ve often had personality evaluations and an employee could make a good match for you.

If you want to get a cat where you will be able to predict how large it will grow and what sort of personality it will have then you will be better off with a pedigree, unless she is interested in getting an adult cat. Pedigree cats are generally more affectionate because only the most affectionate cats are used to breed from so over many generations those personality characteristics get fixed. Some cat breeds can get too affectionate and become glued to their owners’ sides and are very demanding and cannot be left alone too long. Research the breeds to find somethng balanced. A kitten that has been raised in a household with dogs will be more likely to get on with a dog so this may be a more important consideration than breed, but the breeds I would recommend are the Rex breeds; Devon Rex, Cornish Rex, LaPerm and Selkirk Rex. With the exception of the Selkirks, they are all smallish or small to medium in size, they are outgoing without being over the top and if she likes the curly fur of the poodle then she will love the curly fur of the Rex cats. Good luck to her.
