    cat breeds
    Hey there! asked:

I am getting a cat, i have grown up with all female cats and all the same breed (american short hair).
From your experiance which breed of cat is better and what gender is better.
I like cats that are affectionate and not overly independant.
I have had one really great cat she was an american short hair (gray).
I dont want to get another american shorthair tho because i would like to have a cat that looks diffrent from all the other ones i have had.
    Any tips?!

I have three male cats that are all “fixed”, in my opinon, male cats are more friendly and playfull as long as they are fixed. If your not going to have the proceedure done, than I would suggest that you get a fe-male so you dont have to deal with spraying and the ocassional aggresive attitude. As far as breeds go, pedigreed cats tend to cost well over $500 and have more health issues…so I would go for a long-hair(DLH or ALH).

From personal experience I would have to say a Siamese would be good. All of mine have been very affectionate. It is said that because their eyes are so blue, they are missing some particular cones. This leaves the breed with a vision that is not as up to snuff as other breeds, and usually leads to an increase in reliance on human companionship. Also siamese are known for being “talkers” who will just sit and meow right back to you.
I would not adv of getting a persian, as they are known to be more independent. I’ve only owned one however…she was very skiddish, shed like none other, and quite mean if you got into her business..but again thats just one cat out of many.

while male cats are more friendly and playful they also like to wander off outdoors for days at a time looking for females even if they are spayed. Mine did that several time and was gone once for 2 whole months then came back just to run off again a year later and never came back. i say female for sure but get her fixed.

neutered male Abyssinian cats are fantastic cats! but but in some places they can be very expensive here in Australia they are $550 but in America they start at about $1000 i think.
Once you have an Abyssinian it’s hard to go for a different breed cause they are so friendly and loving.
