a lab is pretty good, a number of larger breeds are good. Best if keep them inside the cab tho.

a dog..maybe like a chichuaua..they sleep most of the time..our chichuaua loves car rides..and he just sleeps in the blankets…

      or a lab…but there a bit big…

or a smaller dog (weiner dog, pomeranion..ect)

    • Niki W Says:

A dachshund or a German Shepherd

I was watching a show on Animal Planet the other day and they were talking about traveling pets. Many truckers have companion dogs that double as guard dogs. I think your husbands best bet is to talk to fellow truckers about the types of dogs they recommend.

My dad brings his scottie and westie wherever he goes. I don’t know if a trucker would be made fun of for a little rug-looking dog, though. :-) Labs are good companions, but they get obese easily without a ton of exercise.

Get a dog from the pound. With an older dog you can tell its nature better. Also, they are sooo grateful to you for being rescued. My friend is a trucker and has found that medium sized dogs are easier to have in the cab. However, another friend had a husky with great success. Please, never leave the dog alone in the cab because it doesn’t take much for the cab to get hot, it doesn’t even need to be a sunny day, and for the dog to die of heat.

A Basset Hound. Most laid back dog I’ve ever had.

If you want a pet only for trucking then this is a bad idea for a pet. I would go for a dog though, they tend to be calmer and more loyal than cats. I dont think that the breed matters. I would suggest going to a animal shelter and finding a dog with the personality that suits your needs.

A low energy dog that doesn’t want to run all the time. Since it will be in the cab a lot and cooped up, try a Bassett Hound.

Beagles are nice dogs. Some of them like to travel with their owners but try doing reseach on various dog breeds. Mutts can be nice dogs for traveling, Beagle and Border collie mixes are nice looking dogs.

But it depends on what type of dog you’re looking for, but personally I would suggest a beagle or Beagle mix

No cats….not possible. But a mutt dog….Absolutely. I had a dog that I actually had to leave with my friends in the mountains, as I moved to the city and knew my dog would hate it. And she comes with them to visit me….for 2+ hours car rides. And she suffered through a 16 hour ride with flying colors when I moved back to VA from AR. She loves road trips and gets sad if you don’t take her along on trips. She is a small dog…I think she is a mix of some kind of hound and Jack Russell Terrier. So, definitley….get a mutt. They are the best!!!

i would suggest a Chihuahua, a regular sized one. They are extremely loyaly to their family and no one else. Or you could try a pet rock.

I agree that it should be a dog. But, some breeds are very hyper, not a good idea for long trips. Terriers are hyper…beagles..tend to get lost because they follow their nose..Husky’s are great escape artists from a house with a fence..If you go the pound route..which is a great idea..look for something more laid back. If you are willing to really work with a dog…it is better..some people they think they can just purchase a pet and they learn how to behave all by themselves. Mostly all an animal wants is to be loved, fed. It is up to the owners to teach them what they need in their life to be kept safe. To be well behaved.

As long as he is familiar with the care and training of dogs, I would go with a dog. A cat gets too stressed from travel and needs a permanent home.

I think an older dog that loves car rides is the best option. What if you get a puppy and it hates trucking? It may be hard for him to deal with housetraining, barking, jumping and chewing. Even middle-age dogs can be to hyper for a trucking life. Make sure he gets the dog spayed/neutered and obedience trained or he may be in for a nightmare, and if it doesn’t work out, the dog will ultimately pay the price.
As for breeds, a lap dog may work well, as they don’t need much excersize and don’t need lots of food. Some can even be litter trained. If the cab gets hot, avoid short-nosed breeds like pugs. If it gets cold, avoid chihuahauas and the like. Also, think about how much grooming your breed of choice requires. A Shih Tzu or Maltese can be shaved to reduce maintenance.

For medium-sized dogs, a well socialized staffordshire terrier or pit bull would probably love laying next to his owner all day and night. There are plenty in shelters that get euthanized every day because they can’t find homes. They have short hair, are laid back, devoted, and most are not real big. They usually do not do well with other dogs, so keep that in mind. Also make sure you find a dog that will fit in well at home when he’s not on the road.
