purebred Siamese or Burmese, but then they are high-maintenance in other ways….but anything with fur sheds, even a rug with a lot of pile sheds.

All cat’s shed, that is one thing about our feline friends that we may never able to change. However, there are some breeds with short and fine hair which fits your description:-

      Sphynx
      PeterBald
      Rex

I have had cats for years… Siamese too.. and they do shead…just shorter hair.
some of the curly breeds might not shead so much but I am not sure about that.
the HAIRLESS one is the only kind I know of that for sure does not shead.
I have one long hair … and she makes me nuts over her sheading! (in clumps)

Good luck! Is that you don’t want to deal with pet hair everywhere or do you suffer from allergies? If it’s the latter then it’s not the hair that causes your symptoms but the dander. If it has fur it has dander unless you can bathe it regularly. Ever try to bathe a cat? It’s not fun. There are those hairless cats, but I’m sure they are rather pricey.

There are some types of “hairless” cats, such as the Sphinx. They are not truly hairless, but covered with a soft sort of fuzz.

There are also Oriental shorthairs. They do have fur but it is very short and sleek. The Orientals are very interesting cats, very athletic and affectionate. I don’t have one but I fostered a pure Oriental that was found in a small box in the parking lot of our local Petsmart when I was there with the humane society one day. She was a marvelous cat!

These cats will still shed just as much as any other cat, it just won’t look like much because their furs are very short and they don’t have thick undercoats like some kitties.

If you get one of these kinds of kitties, I hope you will adopt one from a breed specific rescue rather than buy from a breeder. Definitely don’t buy from a pet shop because you will be supporting a network of cruelty. Most pet shop puppies and kittens are bred in “mills” or by backyard breeders that have no regard for the physical health and well being of the animals they are breeding, nor for the genetic health of the offspring.

A few rare and expensive breeds are refered to as hairless. I have had two domestic shorthair and while the shed it is not as bad as most breeds. Grooming at least once a week with reduce shedding it is fun to do and the cat will love it. Bathing once a week will reduce dander which is the primary source of allergies. Start when the cat is still a kitten and do it slowly and gently and she will tollerate it. Both my cats endured bathing quietly if not exactly happy. Keep one hand on the cat at all times or you will be chasing a wet cat.Get one from the pound or animal shelter. They almost always have several domestic short hair. Hint. Make several trips to the shelter and get to know the cats. Hold some and watch them.. each cat has a personality and you will be better in the long run for chosing an appealing personality rather than just going for a “cute” one. If you are lucky you will get a cute cat with an appealing personaity. good luck to you and the kitty.
