Sounds like he’s a Domestic Long Hair. Do you have a picture you can post?

Why is this question “but he is all gray”? Maine Coons don’t just come in tabby - they come in just every colour including solid gray (actually called “Blue”), bicolor, Black, White, Tortie, Tortie and White, etc. So your part Maine Coon might actually be full - though 97% of the cats on this planet - are of no particular breed. Papers would prove if he’s purebred, otherwise there’s really no way to know.
