DON’T get a Calico. They are known to be tempermental & CRANKY. (like my cranky little Kallie)

You can get any cat that’s a lap cat, you’ll have to check them all out. My parent’s cat is a Himalayan Persian / Persian Mix & is nearly comatosed. And her mum was a Big-B, who was a straight Himalayan Persian. I think regular persians are normally docile cats.

here’s a list of the cat breeds recognized by the CFA (like the AKC in dogs).

some breeds are generally more laid back than others, like maine coons, persians, himilayans, ragdolls, scottish folds…but if there isn’t a specific breed you have your heart set on, i’d recommend going to your shelter and looking around. about 1/4 of the animals brought in are pure-breeds anyway, and in many cases you’d be saving a life by adopting one. there are many many sweet and playful lap cats looking for a good home there, and the workers would be happy to pair you up with a cat that matches what you’re looking for.

as for getting a calico, that’s a color not a breed. that’s like saying, “don’t get a grey cat, they’re awful.” you can’t base the temperament of an animal on its color.

Then adopt an adult shelter cat. With adults what you see is what you get - the personality is right there infront of you. With kittens you never really know how affectionate or playful they will be when they get older. I haven’t known ANY cats, though, that will sleep in your lap. Mine will sleep right next to me at night and camp themselves out next to me on my futon but not ON me.

Maine Coons and Ragdolls are notorious lap hogs:
