      That all depends on which organization you use. There are several, and they all recognize different amounts of breeds. CFA (Cat Fanciers Association) for instance, recognizes 39 breeds. They are listed here, along with their acceptable breed standards.
      TICA (The International Cat Association), on the other hand, recognizes around 65 breeds

      These are the main American cat registries. Others include FiFe (Federation Internationale Feline) which recognizes 42 breeds
      and the GCCF (Governing Council of the Cat Fancy) which has a rather strange way of organizing the breeds they recognize :S
