it doesn’t really depend on the breed……..if you want a long haired cat well then he is going to shed more…..but if you want a short haired cat then he wont shed as much.

It depends on the animal within the breed. My cat sheds a lot less than his brother for some reason. My cats hair is thicker and softer. I have an American Shorthair Silver Tabby and he only sheds twice a year and when we go to the vet.

Well obviously the Sphinx breed : they have no fur.
Any other breed of cat will shed a certain amount of fur.

My short hair sheds 10 times more than my longhair…depends on the cat I think. I got the short hair first b/c I thought she would shed less, but I was wrong. I have always heard the Cornish Rex and Devon Rex shed less then most breeds. The best method of controlling cat hair I have found is a brush called the furminator and an awesome vacuum. Best money I ever spent.

Personal observation in my business (vet)–the minimal shedders seem to be Russian Blues, Burmese and similar cats. For what it’s worth, in colors–white cats shed like nobody’s business. I don’t know why, except that’s the way God made them. We have 2 white cats, and everything has white hair on it. My favorite cat is black, and he sheds minimally. He’s very slick, whereas the white cats have dense undercoats. We brush the cats regularly and get mountains of hair off the white cats, just a bit off the black cat and the black tabby. This seems to hold true for my clients’ cats, too. The white cats just shed aLOT, the black and dark-coated cats, not as much. Long-haired cats put out beaucoups hair, doesn’t seem to matter the color of the cat either.

It’s weird, people will say that longhaired cats shed more, but in my own experience, my Shorthaired cat shed more that my longhaired cat does. However, they both shed. The best thing to do is brush them every day. Get started while they are young. My LH cat is 5, and if I want to brush him, I have to sneak up on him and get in a few swipes of the brush before he starts biting me. That is the only time he bites, he’s usually very sweet, but he hates being brushed- so my furniture is covered with cat hair…
